Maree Menzel

Until Never
Hosier Lane VIC Australia
August 4 - 20 2011

Portraits is a posthumous exhibition by Maree Menzel featuring drawings and paintings of friends and muses, completed over 30 years.

Maree Menzel (b. Dimboola) studied fashion design at Prahran College of Art. As a professional model in the swinging 60s, Maree became the inaugural fashion editor for Go Set magazine. She designed costumes and sets for opera and theatre at the English National Opera, Swedish National Theatre, Victorian Opera Company and the Melbourne Theatre Company.

In the 70's, Maree worked as a fashion designer for Prue Acton at the height of her fame, later studying printmaking at the Victorian College of the Arts, and working as a freelance artist and an official court drawer for the ABC and Channel 9 for more than 15 years.

Catalogued and documented by Elizabeth Murray, the works in this exhibition are presented together for the first time and are to be returned to the subjects.

A larger body of work is currently being catalogued in preparation for a publication on the work and life of Maree Menzel.

Maree's work is held in the collections of the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney and the Museum of Victoria.
