Beneath the Asphalt the Beach

The Asphalt Teahaüs concept emerges from decades of creating temporary autonomous zones in art galleries, street installations, and festival environments. Just as Citylights Projects carves out spaces for artistic expression in urban landscapes, Teahaüs carves out moments for contemplative practice. In our hyper-accelerated world, slowing down is an act of positive rebellion and pleasure activism.

Our creative philosophy of tea (Your Eyes are like a Cup of Tea) is the result of a lifelong exploration of tea and practice, and research into the Jbala Sufi trance of The Master Musicians of Joujouka (Morocco), The Way of Tea (Japan), Gong Fu (China), Zen scripture of Bodhiddharma, Australian Indigenous bush medicine, Temporary Autonomous Zones, Situationism, KLF, and underground raves of Cornwall and Melbourne.

These learnings manifest in the principles of stimulation, contemplation, and awareness. The practice involves using smaller brewing vessels and a more potent leaf-to-water ratio than in Western-style brewing. The approach is a way to fully realise the taste of a tea selection, especially a finer one. In essence, the aim is a brew that tastes good and is satisfying to the soul. It is not just about making tea, but is a practice and discipline aimed at quieting the mind, emptying thoughts, and being fully present in the moment to appreciate the time and space.

Teahaüs experiences and sessions feature Asphalt Tea - our curated seasonal range of fine teas from around the world, from ethical suppliers, small estates and wild-grown trees. We specialise in red (black) tea, puerh fermented tea (raw and ripe), and tea cakes, all available on our website for your personal rituals.

We create delicious menus of cold tea blends and non-alcoholic elixirs for events, experiences, and high-velocity workplaces where a tonic pick-me-up, hydration, or wellness is required.

We have created tea and hydration elixir bars backstage at stadiums for the world's leading international touring performers and served thousands of cups of tea to festivalgoers at Splendour in the Craft. We renovated buses into secret teahaüs, beauty salons and conversation zones at Splendour in the Grass from 2014 to 2019. We've brought our micro-mobile, TJ Teahaüs, to the Sunseeker, Dolphin Kiosk at Bacteria Books, and private discos and events across the Northern Rivers of NSW.

Experiences range from tea degustations, pop-up tea bars, hydration stations, and tea parties, to "tea raves" that combine delicious tea and mindful practice with curated TJ-ed soundtracks and celebratory energy. Each experience is customised to honour both the ancient traditions of tea culture and the specific needs of the particular occasion and contemporary contexts.
